In this step by step tutorial I am going to show you how to use a freehand template. (also known as a Sheild.)

For this demonstration I am going to paint a skull using the sheild "Freestyler 3" The subject could be anything but the techniques are still the same.

When using a sheild the idea is to block the area that you do not want painted and to use the shape of the sheild as your guide.
There are many benefits of using a sheild one of them is you have the ability to acheive a perfect symetry.
I am going to begin by drawing a light sketch of a skull. If you are not that artistic you can simply trace one from a book.
I am going to start with the eyebrow so I need to find the closest shape on my template to use as my guide.
I hold the template flat to the surface and I begin by spraying on the template. By painting along the edge of the template I am allowing the overspray to drift onto the surface. I apply several light coats untill I have the effect that I am after.
